I was a bit delighted to receive an invitation from Jeremy Johnson to the book launch for Creative Freedom, written with his brother and Rocketspark cofounder, Grant Johnson, which led to a lovely celebration lunch at Alpino in Cambridge on Friday with a small group of inspiring creatives.
From the first time I made contact with Rocketspark, I thought, “These guys are pretty cool, and legitimately care.” Everything about the way Rocketspark operates is geared to support the graphic designer who has gone out on their own.
For me, what started as a hunt for a reliable website platform for my small business clients when I launched Pocket Rocket in 2019 (now Ahoy Studio) ended up being so much more. From learning from the Rocketspark team to becoming a course tutor for the Rocketspark Academy and a panellist at Brunch by the Bay, to using the platform to build functional websites that help small businesses grow, Rocketspark have been instrumental in the development of my business.
Which is all to say that this is a New Zealand company doing real good in the industry to support people in their businesses – and that should be celebrated.
It was a privilege to be invited to the launch. Drawing on the very real experiences of graphic designers in business in New Zealand, including their own, Creative Freedom is a field guide for running a graphic design business. A gift of “things we learnt the hard way, and would rather you didn’t have to”, intended to help designers feel more in control without losing the love of design, it is going to be a great resource for the industry.
